Michigan Fine Arts Competition giving $5,000 to one Midwest artist

UPDATE: Wednesday, April 9 — The Michigan Fine Arts Competition has extended its deadline to Monday, April 14 in place of the earlier, Friday, April 11 deadline. Artists, this gives you three more days to make your entry piece perfect. Application information can be found at bbartcenter.org.

Friday, March 28 — An ongoing art contest could make one Lansing-area starving artist not so starving. The 32nd Annual Michigan Fine Arts Competition (MFAC), open to artists all over the Midwest, started taking submissions last month; applicants have until April 11 to submit their entries. Winners will divvy up a $5,000 cash prize. There is a submission fee of $40, and is open to artists 18 and over. More information on how to submit, go to bbartcenter.org.

The MFAC is a juried exhibit featuring artists from Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, Illinois and Wisconsin. The exhibit will feature art in all media, but it must have been created since January 2013.

The MFAC typically attracts 500-600 entries, with a showcase of 100 or more juried works. Each year, a prominent artist or curator is chosen as the juror for the competition.This year, the juror for the competition is DJ Hellerman, the curator and director of exhibitions at the Burlington City Arts Center in Burlington, Vt. Hellerman, along with his colleagues, acquire 200-300 new contemporary works of art annually.

The MFAC works will be exhibited from May 16 through July 11.
