Turn it down

While Common Ground has been known for its classic rock lineup in the past, this year boasts a more indie rock theme. Brand New, a Long Island-based alt-rock outfit, headlines opening night Tuesday. Warming up the stage are Circa Survive and the Hold Steady. Since Brand New formed in 2000, the band has released four LPs. Its most recent full length was the 2009 release, “Daisy.” The alt-rock continues Wednesday with mainstage performances from 311 and the Violent Femmes. The Wailers, featuring the remaining members of Bob Marley’s band, also perform. 311 shot to fame in 1995 with its self-titled, triple platinum record. It reached No. 12 on the Billboard 200 and includes “All Mixed Up” and “Down.” 311’s latest disc, “Stereolithic” is the Omaha-based band’s 11th LP.

Thursday, July 10 & Friday, July 11

Thursday is all about modern country, featuring Justin Moore, David Nail and Gord Bamford. Moore’s last two albums, “Outlaws Like Me” and “Off the Beaten Path,” have both topped the country charts. Moore won New Artist of the Year at the 2014 Academy of Country Music Awards. Then on Friday, Common Ground switches gears and fires up the hip hop with headliners Big Sean and Juicy J. Big Sean, a 26-year-old Detroit native, signed with Kanye West’s GOOD Music imprint in 2007. Juicy J, known for hits like “Bandz a Make Her Dance,” is a Memphis solo rapper and founding member of Three 6 Mafia. Last year he dropped his third solo LP, “Stay Trippy.”

Saturday, July 12 & Sunday, July 13

The indie rock takes over again Saturday with Fitz & the Tantrums, Dr. Dog and Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr. Fitz & the Tantrums is a Los Angeles-based indie-soul act signed to Elektra Records. The band was founded by vocalist/songwriter Michael Fitzpatrick in 2008. In 2011, Rolling Stone named the group a “Band to Watch.” Last summer, they released their Elektra Records debut, “More Than Just a Dream.” AllMusic gave the album a near perfect rating. Common Ground wraps up Sunday with Earth Wind & Fire. The legendary Chicago-based group formed in 1971 and are best known for hits like 1975’s “Shining Star,” 1978’s “September” and 1981’s “Let’s Groove.”
