Streamlining the process

FRIDAY, July 3 — Applying for medical marijuana in Michigan could soon become a little simpler.

In an attempt to simplify the process for prospective patients and caregivers, the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs is considering revisions to the application and registration process.

Among the changes proposed:

-Accepting online applications for those seeking registry identification cards

-Allowing discretion in waiving the requirement for a copy of driver’s license or state identification card, if the Michigan Department of State can independently verify online

-Adding email to a list of acceptable ways to contact an applicant or a primary caregiver for information verification

-Implementing a flat application fee $60 for new and renewal applications (previous fee was $100, with a discounted rate of $25 for patients receiving Medicaid or Supplemental Security Income benefits)

-If denied, application fees would remain valid for two years and may be used for reapplication

On July 16, the department will hold a public hearing from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Williams Building Auditorium, located at 525 W. Ottawa St in Lansing. The finalized rules would take effect once LARA files an official copy with the Michigan Secretary of State.
