MLive restructuring will eliminate Lansing editor post

MONDAY, NOV. 24 — Journalism jobs continue to dwindle in Lansing.

According to Meegan Holland, the Lansing Editor for MLive Media Group, the company is restructuring and eliminating her job.

“I had a good run with MLive but it's time to move on,” she posted on her Facebook wall this morning. “I'll be leaving Dec. 31 after the company's latest restructuring eliminated my job.”

John Hiner, vice president of content at MLive Media Group issued the following statement: “The restructuring of leadership does not impact day-to-day operations of our Lansing hub; we remain committed to coverage of state politics and Lansing issues of statewide interest. Dustin Block, currently our editor in Detroit, will lead news coverage in the Detroit and Lansing markets.”

He would not answer whether more positions will be affected by the restructuring.

MLive Media Group is one of the largest media companies in the state, operating the Flint Journal, AnnArbor.com, Grand Rapids Press and more.

Two years ago Booth Newspapers split into two companies, MLive Media Group and

Advance Central Services Michigan. MLive Group handles advertising and news for all newspapers and websites. Advance Services handles human resource, production and distribution.

The news of Holland’s job elimination comes as the Lansing State Journal is decreasing its newsroom size as well. The new newsroom will have its new team in place in early December, according to an article in the LSJ Nov. 1

Holland said on Facebook: “Those of us who moved from Booth Newspapers to MLive knew it was a risk, but it was one worth taking. I got the extraordinary opportunity to help shape a start-up and work alongside dedicated digital journalists — especially my Lansing staff, who taught me something every day. I'll forever hold dear to my heart many MLive colleagues — you know who you are. No regrets. On to the next adventure!”

Holland’s profile on MLive describes her as the “former capital bureau chief for Booth Newspapers and concert producer at Creole Gallery. Loves to attend art shows, concerts & theater. A Kalamazoo College grad, but MSU has wormed its way into her heart.”
