New Register of Deeds

Quinney selected as new Register of Deeds

Posted

WED., FEB. 4 – Derrick Quinney was selected as Ingham county’s new Register of Deeds this afternoon. Quinney was one of three finalists for the position, vacated when Curtis Hertel, Jr. was elected to the state senate in November.

Quinney was appointed effective immediately.

This required him to resign his position on the Lansing City Council, also effective immediately. That resignation was hand written and handed to Lansing City Clerk Chris Swope this afternoon.

Hertel left a legacy of activism with a county position not usually associated with publicity. During his tenure he led the fight against foreclosure fraud, and helped establish and fund a county program to assist homeowners in fighting foreclosures.

That legacy will be something that Quinney says he will “absolutely” continue.

Quinney was just selected as president of the City Council last month. He has served on council since January 2007 when he was appointed to replace Joan Bauer who was elected to the state House of Representatives.

Quinney’s resignation means Lansing City Council will now have to appoint a new at-large council member to fulfill the remainder of his term. That term expires Dec. 31.

Other finalists were Lansing City Councilwoman Carol Wood and Ingham County Commissioner Carol Koenig.
