Area groups receive funds for summer camp scholarships

Posted

FRIDAY, MAY 1 — Summer camps are a great way for youth to learn, gain skills and make friends, but paying for those camps can be a tough hurdle for many families to clear. This summer, many Greater Lansing youth in financial need will get a chance to attend camps through the Arts Council of Greater Lansing’s Young Creatives Program.

Tuesday, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing announced the 2015 recipients of scholarship funds for youth through its Young Creatives Program. The awards, which are funded by the council through the Arts Advancement Endowment Fund and MSU Federal Credit Union, were given to nonprofit organizations in the Greater Lansing area. Organizations awarded with the funds will use them to provide scholarships to attend art programs and classes for kids age 5-17 who are in financial need.

“We have so many wonderful organizations in our region, and they are creating great programs for our area youth,” said Deborah Mikula, Arts Council of Greater Lansing executive director. “It is very gratifying to offer them funding that supports their work and helps provide scholarships to families in need.”

The Lansing Art Gallery, one of the recipients of the award, will provide scholarships to seven students to attend a full week of its Summer Art Camp. The Summer Art Camp program spans four weeks and focuses on creativity, technique, critique and vocabulary for students ages 7-12. Sessions will be led by professional artists at the Lansing Art Gallery. Barb Whitney, executive director of the gallery, is honored to receive the award and looks forward the Summer Art Camp.

“To receive funds this year has been such a joy for the Lansing Art Gallery,” Whitney said. “This is a program that supports access to the arts in a really important way.”

All-of-us Express Children’s Theatre, another recipient of the award, will use the funds to award full or partial scholarships for students age 5-15 to attend a series of drama day-camps throughout the summer at East Lansing’s Hannah Community Center.

The MSU Community Music School will use its award to provide financial assistance for students to attend one of six summer music camps.

REACH Studio Art Center will provide $75 scholarships for students to attend a four-day camp and $20 scholarships for students to attend a Friday art workshop session.

The Wharton Center for Performing Arts will provide scholarships for students to attend a Broadway themed camp called Take it from the Top. The camp, which is part of MSUFCU’s Institute for Arts & Creativity, gives participants an opportunity to explore music, dance and theater with Broadway professionals.
