Lansing law firm alleges fraud against Boles

THURSDAY, MAY 14 — Lansing City Councilwoman A’Lynne Boles is being sued by a Lansing law firm that claims she failed to deliver services she had agreed to do.

According to the suit, filed in Lansing’s 54-A District Court, Boles verbally agreed to perform website advertising services for Grabel & Associates, a criminal defense firm at 120 N. Washington Square. The law firm alleges Boles agreed in September 2014 to work as an independent contractor developing connections and links to advertising on third-party websites.

The agreement was worth $44,000 a year for 40 hours a week, according to the lawsuit. Boles was paid $5,923.20, the lawsuit alleges.

Despite agreeing to provide detailed information about her work, the lawsuit alleges she did not do so.

“Defendant provided a list of entities with no contact information, URL information. phone numbers, e-mail addresses, website addresses, or names of contact persons to verify her claims,” writes Scott Grabel in the lawsuit. He is being represented by J. Nicholas Bostic of Grabel’s own firm.

The suit contends that Boles, by failing to document her work or provide documentation for the work, converted the payments and acted in fraud. Conversion means taking money under false pretenses, while fraud is an allegation of creating a false pretense.

The suit has a pre-trial hearing in district court today.
