One step closer

Tuesday vote scheduled for (SCENE) Metrospace transition

THURSDAY, MAY 28 — The Department of Art, Art History and Design at Michigan State University is one step closer to securing a deal with the City of East Lansing for curatorial control of (SCENE) Metrospace. Timothy McCaffrey, East Lansing’s Director of Parks and Recreation, discussed the most recent changes to the agreement at Tuesday’s City Council Work Session.

The City of East Lansing has proposed that it would now enter an ongoing operating agreement with the MSU, rather than a fixed-term lease agreement. A draft of this agreement was presented to the council.

“A vast majority of the language of the document has not changed,” McCaffrey said. “It’s still an agreement of that nature.”

New language had been added to Section 1 of the agreement that states that either party may terminate the agreement at any time as long as it notifies the other party with a written 90-day notice.

The agreement also states that MSU will keep (SCENE) Metrospace staffed for at least 20 hours per week to keep the gallery open to the general public.

Councilwoman Diane Goddeeris raised questions about costs for the public to attend events and exhibitions at the venue. A previous version of the agreement had stipulated that the events be free. McCaffrey stated that events would be free to the general public. While that detail is missing from the agreement, McCaffrey said that the free admission details would be included in the final agreement.

After these minor adjustments, McCaffrey recommended that the operating agreement should be approved at the next regular City Council meeting on Tuesday.
