Ingham County offers free HIV testing today

Posted

FRIDAY, JUNE 26 — In conjunction with National HIV Testing Day, the Ingham County Health Department is hosting a community testing event today, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the health department building located at 5303 S. Cedar Street in Lansing.

Free anonymous testing is available for all Ingham County residents. Testing and treatment for other sexually transmitted infections is included.

“It is critical to know your HIV status,” said Linda S. Vail, Ingham County health officer. “An astounding 1 in 7 people with HIV do not know they are HIV positive. People who are HIV positive can live healthy, long lives, but only with diagnosis and treatment.”

Last year, 25 people were newly diagnosed with HIV in Ingham County. The county has the third highest HIV prevalence among local health department jurisdictions in Michigan. Approximately 500 people in Ingham County are living with HIV.

While testing is covered by most health plans and insurance is accepted during the event, clients may opt against using their health insurance in favor of the free anonymous testing. Clients will also have the opportunity to attend a personal consult where they can discuss their risk factors and ways to reduce the risk for HIV and other STIs.

Those wishing to be tested during the event should enter the health department through door number three and follow the red ribbon to Adult Health. No appointment is needed. For additional information, contact the HIV/STI prevention program at (517) 887-4424.
