MONDAY, Aug. 10 — Actress and author Melissa Gilbert announced Monday that she will seek the Democratic nomination for 8th Congressional district in Michigan in 2016.

“Here in Michigan, I know people are doing their best to make a good life for themselves and their families. When it comes down to it, I think that's what we all really want,” said Gilbert.

“I'm running for Congress to make life a little easier for all the families who feel they have fallen through the cracks in today's economy. I believe building a new economy is a team effort, and we need to bring fresh voices to the table to get the job done.”

Gilbert, 51, best known for her portrayal of Laura Ingalls Wilder in the long running television series “Little House on the Prairie,” lives in Livingston County. She is married to actor Timothy Busfield, who graduated from East Lansing High School.

The 8th Congressional seat is represented by Republican Mike Bishop of Rochester. A first termer, he replaced Mike Rogers, also a Republican, who served from 2000 to 2014.
