THURSDAY, Oct. 8 — An new outdoor mural, unveiled today, welcomes visitors to downtown Lansing.

The 12-by-28-foot mural, created by Michigan artist Mathew Sharum, adorns the east wall of the 414 E. Michigan Ave. building, overlooking the Nuthouse Sports Grill. The painting is based on vintage postcard designs and carries messages of “Greetings from Lansing” and “Alive after 5,” a nod to the area’s transformation into an evening hotspot.

The project was spearheaded by Downtown Lansing Inc., with financial assistance from the Lansing Economic Area Partnership.

“This project transforms an otherwise bland wall space into a visually stunning welcome message,” said Phil Clacko, vice president of Downtown Lansing Inc., noting that the mural will be illuminated from dusk until 2 a.m.

The project is one of 14 public art projects that are funded by grants from LEAP. The organization sees public art and placemaking as a key part of its strategy to bring talent to the Lansing area.

“The number one issue people are talking to LEAP about is that they’re competing for workers on an international scale,” said Bob Trezise, president and CEO of LEAP. “We need to have a great place that is competitive with bigger cities.”

Sharum, a Dearborn-based artist has painted murals throughout the Midwest, most notably a 2,400-square-foot mural that was created for a Kid Rock music video in Detroit.
