MSU explores the cultural richness of Latin American art and music tonight with this year’s installment of its Latin IS America festival. Venezuelan cellist Horacio Contreras and Colombian pianist Cesar Cañón come together to perform rarely heard works by Latin American composers. The duo will play works that span nearly 100 years, including Heitor Villa-Lobos' Second Sonata for cello and piano and Carolina Heredia's Añoranzas for cello and electronics. Prior to the performance, Heredia will give a lecture at 2:30 p.m. in Room 245 of MSU’s Music Building. The Argentinian composer will discuss her recent work, which explores themes of gender and national identity through the writings of three South American women poets. The concert will also feature a work by MSU composition Professor Ricardo Lorenz. 8 p.m. FREE. Cook Recital Hall, Music Building, 333 W. Circle Drive, East Lansing. (517) 353-9958, music.msu.edu/latin-is-america.
