Iorio’s offers cool sweetness, on or off the stick

THURSDAY, July 14 — With sizzling, Sicilian-style heat expected in Lansing this week, sweet ices from Iorio's Gelateria promise Mediterranean-style relief. A Thursday celebration unveiling a new line of sweet treats, with free gelato popsicles to the first 50 customers, makes it an offer few will be able to refuse.

New to East Lansing in November 2015, Iorio's (prounounced “ee-yore-ee-yoes”) has gone from a business selling products out of pushcarts at local markets and festivals to a hot spot this summer.

"The winter months were tough because it's so cold, but [business] has been going great our first summer in East Lansing," said owner Mary Lemmer. "The opening months here have been doing better than Ann Arbor did five years ago when it opened."

Mary Lemmer and co-owner Nick Lemmer, grandchildren of Italian immigrants, started their first retail stand in Ann Arbor in 2011. Their Lansing stand started at the City Market and moved to its present spot on Trowbridge Road last year.

To celebrate the summer months, Iorio's will debut new products at a party this Thursday: gelato popsicles, gelato shakes, gelato smoothies, and fruit smoothies. Gelato smoothies can be using any gelato flavor (or combination of flavors) out of the 24 flavors Iorio's offers.

To sweeten the deal, Iorio's will give away free gelato popsicles to the first 50 customers and fruit smoothies will be half off. Gelato, sorbetto, and coffee drinks will also be on hand.

The event will take place from 4-7 p.m. in the outdoor patio of Iorio's, at 1034 Trowbridge Road, East Lansing. Call (517) 244-6040 for more information.
