Sometimes talents are hidden, but the talent was in plain sight Thursday as the winners of the 2017 MSUFCU Student Art Exhibit were reveled.

With over 19 high schools participating this year, the ceremony recognized student submissions in two categories: juried and people’s choice awards, as well as social media award.

In addition to a $300 cash prize, first place juried award winner Kathryn Horst of Haslett High School will get her piece displayed on a billboard throughout the month of March.

“I’m shaking,” she said with a smile. “I did not expect this at all. I thought I’d walk with an honorable mention, but nope!”

The inspiration for her piece, “Vacancy,” came from heartbreak and pain that come with it. Horst appreciated the chance to meet with other student artists from the Greater Lansing area.

“It brings all of us together, and everyone here cares about art or has a passion for it,” she said. “I think that’s really important, to come together with people who are like-minded.”

Zosha Korzecke of East Lansing High School was voted people’s choice first place winner for “Smush.” The piece is a painting of one of her close friends.

“I really wanted to represent how weird she was — but in a really beautiful way,” she said.

Korzecke , who takes advanced studio art classes in school, said she appreciates that student work is being acknowledged.

“It feels really good to know that other people are looking at what I’m creating and appreciating it,” she said. “It lets me know that what I’m doing is helping other people, and that feels good. It’s not just me creating art for myself.”

April Clobes, president and CEO of MSUFCU, emphasized that giving students the opportunity to showcase their talent is essential, because they may not have the chance to do so otherwise.

“It’s extraordinarily gratifying to host this program,” she said. “A lot of students may be in athletics and have a regular opportunity to share their talent with the community and their family. This provides a similar venue for art students to have that opportunity as well.”
