Posted

TUESDAY, Feb. 28 — Katrina Daniels, who has served as program director at Old Town’s MICA Gallery since April 2014, announced yesterday via email that she is leaving the gallery.

“It was with a heavy heart that I say good bye to MICA as the Director,” she wrote. “Throughout my time here I have been overwhelmed by the community support that I have received from the artists, neighbors, local businesses, Old Town Lansing and the community at large.”

The gallery will host a goodbye party 5 to 8 p.m. Friday as part of the Arts Council of Greater Lansing’s Arts Night Out event. Daniels declined to speak about her future plans for now.

In addition to art exhibitions, MICA Gallery also hosts a variety of cultural events, including contemporary dance performances and poetry readings, and it also produces Old Town JazzFest and Michigan BluesFest.

Terry Terry, CEO of MessageMakers and president of MICA’s board of directors, shared the following statement on behalf of the board:

The Michigan Institute for Contemporary Art is saying goodbye to director Katrina Daniels, with thanks for her three years of service in making the MICA Gallery a centerpiece of the Old Town arts community. We wish her the best in all her future endeavors and invite friends of MICA to join her for a going-away party on March 3 from 5-8 pm at the MICA Gallery.

MICA will continue to focus on being a catalyst for quality arts programming, through its flagship programs Lansing JazzFest and Michigan BluesFest, now seen on BackStage Pass in 100 American public television markets. In addition, MICA will be coordinating an art exhibit in Hart Plaza at the center of downtown Detroit in July and is preparing a touring show of Michigan visual artists for exhibition throughout the U.S. MICA Gallery will return to its roots as a volunteer-led space.

Full statement from Katrina Daniels:

It was with a heavy heart that I say good bye to MICA as the Director. I first entered through the doors of MICA Gallery three years ago! Over this time I have worked to curate innovative exhibitions and develop programming to use art in order to engage with the community. I have also produced the Lansing JazzFest and the Old Town BluesFest and have had the absolute pleasure of working with hundreds of volunteers to make this happen.

Throughout my time here I have been overwhelmed by the community support that I have received from the artists, neighbors, local businesses, Old Town Lansing and the community at large.

It has been my absolute honor and pleasure to serve you - the community. I am incredibly proud of the work that I have done here and humbled by the response. I will miss you all and I hope to stay in touch!

You're invited to the "Going Away Party" on March 3rd from 5pm - 8pm! Learn more here.

With the warmest wishes, Katrina M. Daniels
