Back-to-school backpack giveaway

Local radio station gives backpacks to students in need

Don’t spend another day wondering where your child’s school supplies will come from, Power 96.5 (WQHH-FM) has got your covered on Aug. 10, with their annual Backpack Giveaway.

Last year gave away just over 1,200 backpacks and we’re looking to do somewhere around there if not a little bit more,” said KC McIntosh, the station’s promotions director and one of its personalities. “We have somewhere close to 1,500 backpacks to give away.”

Founded in 2012, the radio station’s giveaway has been providing Lansing-area children with backpacks filled with school supplies because of their “social responsibility” McIntosh said.

“We depend on the community in order to thrive as a company and as a result, we like to give back,” McIntosh said. “Our audience does so much by giving us a listening ear. We can give back to the community at the least, by giving a backpack giveaway.”

The giveaway has been planned over a series of months and is sponsored by Waverly Community Schools, Career Quest Learning Centers, RightWay Automotive Sales, Sparrow Hospital, Communities in Schools of Michigan and Meijer. The event is aimed at children from grades K-12 and those receiving a backpack must be accompanied by a parent.

The event will be held at Waverly High School and will include much more than just a backpack giveaway. Attendees are encouraged to get to the event early and stay for the included events like a bounce house, face painting and more.
