Another appointment to Housing Commission

Mayor picks housing manager to fill recent resignation

THURSDAY, AUG. 30 — A recently announced appointment to Lansing’s Housing Commission marks the second official to be seated to the board by Mayor Andy Schor’s administration within just as many months.

Loria Hall, a manager of a local “affordable housing facility” billed with more than a decade of experience, will immediately fill a gap left by recently resigned Commissioner Bethany Deschaine, with an unpaid term to expire in 2020. Deschaine left without explanation Aug. 20, according to a representative for Schor’s office.

Hall’s “experience and knowledge of current housing trends will be a tremendous asset for the Lansing Housing Commission moving forward,” Schor said in a statement released late this afternoon. Hall has already been vetted and City Council confirmation is not required for the immediate appointment, the release emphasized.

Commission Chairman Tony Baltimore said he hasn’t met Hallm, but looks forward to the introduction. She — and Deschaine — couldn’t immediately be reached for comment Thursday afternoon. But Baltimore suggested Deschaine had, “Served her time and was ready to move on to do other things in the community.”

“She certainly asked some great questions and, you know, served admirably on the board,” Baltimore said.

Schor in July appointed president of the residents council at South Washington Park apartments, Dan Sober, to fill another vacancy left by outgoing Commissioner Bobby Joyce. Deschaine, amid criticism and a recent City Council vote of no confidence, just months ago publicly voiced plans to retain her position on the board.

Rental inspections this month released from Schor’s office detailed code violations within units managed by the Housing Commission and city officials remain committed to an “aggressive” schedule to get them fixed. Schor previously estimated the work could take months, but doubled down on commitment to move quickly.

“I think she probably just felt that she was ready to move on,” Baltimore added.
