City of Lansing remembers 9/11

Lansing interim fire chief Dave Purchase, police chief Michael Yankowski and Mayor Andy Schor spoke at Wentworth park beside the 10 foot “H” beam salvaged from the World Trade Center in a day of remembrance for 9/11.

“I spent a lot of time in the New York Transit Museum, about three quarters of the way up Trade Center One,” Schor said.

“I would never believe the beautiful New York City landscape could be altered. I would never believe there would be an attack on our nation, but I was naive. We all were.”

“I had family and friends that worked in and around the trade center. I lost a friend on 9/11,” Yankowski said.

“As a country when there is tragedy and adversity we come together as one, united as one. There is a duty to our country and community that we can never forget.”

17,000 people have been and continue to be affected by 9/11 related illnesses, Yankowski said.

“We pay tribute for those 3,000 first responders and innocent citizens that lost their lives on September 11.”
