THURSDAY, SEPT. 27 — Fear not prospective dog owners, the eight week Right Foot Series teaches the basics of breeds, training and pet behavior to better prepare new owners for the companionship of a canine.

“People don't think about breed differences, and aren’t well-informed about what to expect when they get a dog,” AnnaBelle’s Pet Station co-owner Ann Andrews said. “The goal of the class is to help people choose an appropriate dog, and understand what they need to do to have a successful adoption.”

You wouldn’t make a car purchase without research, and dogs are a much bigger commitment, Andrews added.

“We see a lot of people who get a puppy, which should be a joyful time, but turns out to be very frustrating, because they don't understand what the dog’s characteristics are,” Andrews said.

“One couple got a husky, a dog that needs a lot of exercise.”

They had a small apartment and no fenced in yard for the dog to run and had to return the dog to the breeder, Andrews said.

Trainer Maegan Payne came up with the idea after seeing new owners at her puppy classes, she said. Payne will lead the series.

Classes aren’t just for new dog owners. Those interested in making sense of their dog’s behavior can attend the last three weeks of class for “Speaking Dog” classes.

“Dogs don't talk so you have to learn what postures mean.”
