WEDNESDAY, Oct. 3 — Potato cupcakes, stress-ball spuds and 500 pounds of french fries will sit atop Capitol lawn to celebrate all things that come from Michigan potatoes.

“A lot of people don't even know we grow potatoes,” said Nate Chesher, marketing manager of Michigan Potatoes said. “We are the number one potato chip producing state and produce one in four potato chip bags in the country.”

Better Made, Uncle Ray’s and Herr’s potato chips depend on Michigan potatoes almost exclusively. Lay’s potato chips also use Michigan potatoes.

Potato industry advocates Michigan Potatoes will be hosting the event. Founded in 1970, the groups mission statement reads, “To foster and promote an economically viable potato industry in Michigan by providing responsible leadership for the industry.”

Michigan has been a leading potato producer for generations.

“They love water, which we have plenty of, and drainage with sandy soil. It is ideal for growing potatoes and the climate generally doesn't get too warm.”

Starchy fare will be provided by the Ingham Intermediate School District Culinary Arts program.

They will have potato cupcakes made with a caramel cream filling, peanut butter buttercream, crushed potato chips and a chocolate drizzle.

Also, there will be tacos de papa, a potato taco with Michigan yellow potatoes, tomatoes, tomatillo sauce, shredded cabbage, tomato slices, radish slices, diced onion and Mexican cheese.

Doing events like this is about educating the public about this industry in Michigan, Chesher said.

According to Michigan Potatoes, Michigan harvests nearly two billion pounds of potatoes annually with a value of $178 million.

“We hope people embrace this,” Chesher said. “It is going to be a beautiful day with sunny skies and french fries.”
