SATURDAY, Jan. 12 — Greater Lansing artists and models will be body painting all afternoon and evening in the astrology-themed “Look to the Stars” Starving Arts series competition at the Avenue Cafe.

Setting a sonic backdrop, musical entertainment will be provided by local artists Tree Rex, Michael Janke, The Don, SugaShawn, Nate Cunningham and DJ K8.

Additionally, there will be a live glass blowing demo, fire twirlers and tarot card readings.

The body painting winner will take home a $300 cash prize. Visual arts company Kushin hosts the event.

“We have a tendency to go above and beyond and make this like a miniature festival,” owner of Kushin Kevin Amom said. “It is an interactive art scene where you can see firsthand how people create.”

Amom said there was no grand revelation to start hosting body painting events.

“You know the Pink Floyd poster with the girls by the pool and their backs painted? On a whim I gave an event doing that a shot and every time we’ve sold out.”

Past themes included Heroes vs. Villains and Cirque du Arts.

A former participant who passed away told me this show gave her inspiration to start doing art again, Amom said.

“She was a phenomenal artist and to see artists like that get frustrated with life in general and know this gives people an outlet makes it all worth it.”

Art gives life meaning to an otherwise dull existence, he added.

“To see how what people create and know you are a source for this makes you feel good.”
