If you happen to drive by this abandoned Mobil station on the corner of Larch Street and Michigan Avenue, be sure to “speed pass” it. This monstrosity has wooden boards on the windows that look more like a failed art project than anything else.

Jared Smith, manager of Great Lakes Coffee shop across the street, remembers some construction being done to the station last August.

"They were doing work on the roof and the exterior. I don’t know what happened," Smith said. Green weeds grow underneath a nearby sign that reads, "Restoration by New Hab Inc." When called, the number was disconnected. And, there are red and black signs pasted on the building advertising that it’s “for sale by owner.”

Jim Brogan owns a tire shop next door and remembers when the station was still open.

"It’s terrible. It’s not only an eyesore, it’s a haven for homeless people to just hang out. We’d rather not have them around our place of business.”
