It’s no surprise that a hip-hop duo that boasts “I’d rather be up in my nigga’s crib playin’ CDs than give them greedy-ass club owners 25 beans” would be up for a topsecret gig at an independent art space, but it didn’t make it any less of a shock when word got back to City Pulse HQ that emcees Stic. man and M-1, known collectively as the hyper-conscious, politically charged crew Dead Prez, stopped by for a word-of-mouth only engagement at Lansing’s Basement 414 last Saturday.
The Florida-based group was in mid-Michigan for a lecture at MSU sponsored by Power Shift. Organizers at B414 kept the show a secret until the last minute to avoid overflow crowds. Organizers say about 200 witnessed the group’s nearly two-hour set, and members of Dead Prez mentioned a possible return to Lansing.
