On the road

Portable Feast is living up to its name

Posted

For seven and a half years, Portable Feast and Friends in Old Town was anything but mobile. Sure, owner Sharon Hind supplemented her walk-in customers with catering gigs, but it wasn’t like her restaurant at 1216 Turner St. had wheels on it or anything. Now it seems that the ironic name was a case of foresight.

“Portable Feast really is portable now,” says Hind. Last week she unveiled her new venture, a food service truck serving breakfast and lunch. Hind says the menu is similar to her previous menu — salads, wraps, paninis, fresh soups — but now she can change it up daily. She says she got burned out working out of her old location, which she sold last November (it’s now a caf-style eatery). Hind considered a move to North Carolina, but decided to stay in Lansing.

“Theres far less overhead cost and stress working this way,” she says. “I love the food business, and this is a unique way for me to continue doing what I love to do.”
