Play ball - or just play music

Lansing Concert Band plans to do both Saturday

Posted
The Lansing Concert Band closes its 2009-2010 season Saturday by “Covering the Bases” with a salute to baseball and a guestappearance by tuba soloist Deanna Swoboda, a professor oftuba/euphonium at Western Michigan University and a member of theWestern Brass Quintet, a faculty ensemble.

Swoboda will be featured on two songs with the band. A new arrangement of Variations on “Barnacle Bill the Sailor” allows Swodoba to showcase the tuba’s extreme range. Then, as a former clarinet ist, Swodoba will perform a tuba rendition of “Clarinet Polka.”

“I love the theme,” Swoboda said. “It’s fun because it’s making a connection beyond music. Maybe a few sports fans will come up.”

She’s also equally excited to play with the Lansing Concert Band, “It’s a really good band. They play good music, yet music that is entertaining and interesting to the audience.”

The band will continue its baseball theme with Ken Beachler narrating “Casey at the Bat,” and a performance of “Pastime: A Salute to Baseball,” a rapid-fire variation of “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.”

The concert features the world premiere of “Dancing Day” by Jim Colonna, a piece commissioned to commemorate the retirement of the band’s associate director John Endahl, who will also conduct the concert.
