Art Alley opens its doors Friday

Photographer Lewis Smith will be showcased at REO Town gallery

Tom Stewart is about tolaunch an incubator. But instead of hatching eggs, he hopes to launch a new eraof opportunity for artists.

Stewart is the presidentof the Center for New Enterprise Opportunity, the group behind Art Alley, whichis holding an open house from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday. Art Alley is located at 1133S. Washington Avenue in the REO Town neighborhood.

The Friday event showcasesthe work of portrait and art photographer Lewis Smith, and will feature horsd’oeuvres, a cash bar and free parking, as well as a post-show gathering atIzzo’s Pub and Pizzeria. A $5 donation is suggested.

“This is a start atbringing REO Town, this once beautiful part of Lansing, back to what it used tobe,” Stewart said in a press release announcing Art Alley.“Our goal is toexpose the community to the community of creative entrepreneurs inLansing.”

The mission of Art Alley, according to the press release, is“to foster creativity and entrepreneurship by offering an environment andinfrastructure that cultivates small businesses through unique collaborationopportunities, affordable space, and support services for growing ventures toexpand to the Greater Lansing community. The NEO Center hopes that by providingthis assistance, they are able to create a community that both supports theideals of entrepreneurship and sustains a high level of economic activity.”
