From ’Hairy’ to Scheherazade

Fantasy finds its way to local stages

Riverwalk Theatre is turning into a swamp and Lansing Community College is turning into a desert — at least for a short time.

“Wiley and the Hairy Man,” set in the waters of the Tombigbee swamp, opens Friday at Riverwalk, while LCC plays host to “Arabian Nights,” its latest Summer Stage Under the Stars production, Wednesday through Sunday.

“Arabian” is playwright Mary Zimmerman’s adaptation of “The Book of The Thousand Nights and One Night,” chronicling the mesmerizing tales of the skilled storyteller Scheherazade, who must keep spinning suspenseful yarns to avoid being executed by the foultempered king who has married her. The show is directed by Deborah Keller and features students from LCC’s 2nd Semester Voice and Movement Studio.

“Wiley” stars Jonathan Turkus as a boy destined to face the scariest thing he can imagine: the Hairy Man who haunts his neighborhood. Kerry Waters plays Wiley’s mom. No one is safe from the Hairy Man’s clutches since “Wiley” will be performed with the audience right in the midst of the action; according to Riverwalk, “The show may frighten young children and is not recommended for ages under 8 years.”
