TURN IT DOWN: A survey of Lansing's musical landscape

For those who didn’t score tickets to this year’s Ozzfest, Mac’s Bar will have a sample of the head-banging greatness on Wednesday, Aug. 18 when Goatwhore takes a day off from its tour with Ozzy.

Hailing from New Orleans, Goatwhore (which includes former members of Soilent Green and Acid Bath) has been playing genuine, thrashing death metal since 1997 — not to mention the band is signed to the notable Metal Blade Records.

On their MySpace page, the band members describe their sound as “a formulated ritual of diverse blasphemy to be played as a requiem for your suicide. An uplifting revenge in the battle for your loss of words to prove any God is at fault for our existence.” The band’s latest album, "Carving Out the Eyes of God," is out now.

Opening the show is Lansings Genocya, featuring Tim Sever (drums), James Albrecht (bass), Brad Van Staveren (guitar/A head banging), Matt Cunningham (guitar) and new lead vocalist Dane Brown. The band recently completed its new album, “Ever Descent,” and hopes to have it released by the end of the summer.

Another band on the roster is Serpent Crown, a black metal band that features Albrecht from Genocya. After multiple line-up changes, the band recorded a four-song demo in 2009 with Sean “Xaphan” Peters (of local metal bands Summon, Wastelander).
