Meridian Community Band salutes Sousa

Trombonist Ava Ordman and tenor Mark Gary are guest artists

Wednesday, October 27 -- The Meridian Community Band, under the direction ofCarolyn Sherrill, presentsthe 17th annual "Grand Sousa Concert" at 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 29, at the MacDonald Middle School, 1901 Burcham Drive.

Theprogram showcases soloists Ava Ordman,associate professor of trombone at Michigan State University, and Mark Gary, a tenor who is currently completing the doctoral program in choral conducting at MSU.

Ordmanwill play "The Patriot," composed by Sousa’s own solotrombonist, Arthur Pryor, “the Paganini of the trombone.” Ordman is the principal trombonist in the Lansing Symphony Orchestraand the Cabrillo Music Festival Orchestra in Santa Cruz, Calif.

Also on the program: Shostakovich’s Festive Overture; “Prayer,” from Engelbert Humperdinck’s operetta "Hansel andGretel"; Tchaikovsky’s Marche Slave; Percy Grainger’sarrangement of “Ye Banks and Braes”; and Victor Herbert’s "Panamericana." The MCB is also performing Sousa's "Songsof Grace and Songs of Glory," an arrangement of religious songs, including “Rock ofAges,” “Steal Away” and “Nearer My God to Thee.”

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors, andstudents are free.
