No Antonio Banderas jokes here. With "Puss in Boots," Riverwalk Theatre is aiming for a purr-fectly pleasant production for the whole family.

“Puss in Boots” is a classic French fairy tale about a mischievous cat that uses a crafty strategy of deception and dishonesty to help out her poor master.

When the youngest son of a miller (Danny Bethea) receives a cat (played by Donna Green) for his inheritance, he has no idea how cunning the feline is. Puss’ ingenuity helps her to gain money, clout and even a princess (Chelsea Hagger) for her lowly master by passing him off as the fictitious Marquis of Carabas.

The play is narrated by a donkey (Bob Murrell), while other characters like King Louis the Fat (Mike Mahoney) and Queen Francesca the Fit (Angela Dill) augment the humorous entourage of characters.

The cast also includes Evan Pinsonnault, Mike Stewart, Anna Maier, Carrie Glazer, Colleen Bethea, Jim Noble, Tim Beam, Danny Ferris, Cameron Bethea and Chris Bethea. The musical director is Doug Austin.

This is Riverwalk Theatre’s second production of “Puss in Boots,” which was first staged 14 years ago.

“Puss” is one of many mini-musical comedies aimed at children but performed by adults that has been performed by Riverwalk.

“We realized that the kids who say these plays 20 years ago, now might have kids of their own,” said Jane Zussman, director of “Puss in Boots.”

She also said that attending these Riverwalk Theatre productions coming out right around the holiday has become a tradition for some families.

“It’s a mix of wonderful ingredients and they are all coming together to bake up into a pretty good cake,” Zussman said.
