Silence may be golden for Riverwalk

Silent art auction at Decker's raises money for theater lighting

Coffee at Decker’s will soon come with a view.

Decker’s Coffeehouse, 220 S. Washington Square in downtown Lansing, is teaming up with Riverwalk Theatre to host a silent art auction. Funds raised at the auction will support the theater. The goal is to raise enough money to pay for track lighting in the theater’s lobby, to lighten up its art shows.

“After our renovation, our walls were darker,” said Mike Siracuse, Riverwalk Theater manager. “It doesn’t do these paintings justice.” Track lighting would better highlight the paintings, making them more prominent to viewers. “Once in place, they should really add to the lobby.”

The auction at Decker’s will include more than a dozen pieces by local artists, including watercolors, oils, portraits, landscapes and photographs. Also included will be a glass tree ornament made by Craig Mitchell Smith of Glass Gallery. The ornament, similar in design to the piece he recently contributed as Michigan’s piece of the National Christmas tree, will consist of a cardinal in a nest amidst a wintery backdrop.

Events will conclude with a party at Decker’s on Dec. 9, featuring the music of local guitarist/singer Mark Bethea, Attendees can enter a drawing to win a special door prize while enjoying complimentary appetizers from 6 p.m. on.

The Riverwalk Theatre, which first opened in 1989, completed renovations two years ago. The theater exists as a host for local artists, taking no charge or commission from artists, whether they sell anything or not. They host new artists every eight weeks.
