Mama Bear's closes its doors

Old Town eatery announces closing via Facebook posting

It looks like Mama Bear's Cafe owner Cecilia "Chica" Garcia will be doing her cooking at home from now on.

The Old Town eatery closed its doors Wednesday afternoon, only hours after Garcia posted a note headlined "Change is gonna come" on her Facebook page.

"As some of you may or may not know I decided a little over a month ago to close Mama Bear's cafe," she wrote. "Today is our last day. Life is change and we are changed by life every day. Mama Bear's is a project that was great for me 4 years ago but I am a different person now."

Garcia mentioned her two children, ages 13 and 2, and that "my business partner and I went our separate ways some time ago."

Mama Bear's opened in August 2007 and quickly drew attention — and admirers — for its emphasis on largely organic ingredients. “It's definitely a lot healthier and it tastes better,” Garcia said of organic food in an October 2007 City Pulse profile

In her Facebook post, she talks about how her priorities have changed during that time.

"Running a small business is 24/7 but you are all very aware of that. Raising children in a safe environment is a 24/7 job as well. It's time to put Mama Bear's on hiatus."

Garcia also mentions plans to publish cookbooks in the future "and hopefully (with the help of family, friends and leading experts) guide two young people on their way to being socially relevant people."

As of late Wednesday afternoon, the cafe's signage was already gone.
