(Friday, Dec. 3) Sad news from Small Things Productions: The Girlyman concert scheduled for Dec. 12 at Creole Gallery has been canceled. Girlyman member Doris Muramatsu has been diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia, prompting the group to scrap their tour plans.
"Fortunately, CML is a very treatable form of leukemia," the band notes on its website, "with high
survival rates (95 %), and it can generally be treated with a pill (no
chemo, etc.). Doris is holding up well so far, but she's fatigued and
understandably in a little bit of shock. We all are, but we have a very
tight-knit community that is pulling together, and Doris is in good
spirits and determined to make a full recovery. The doctors have said
that in time she'll probably be able to return to an active
Girlyman-esque lifestyle, but we don't want to risk bringing her out on
the road so soon. Right now, she needs rest."
Promoter Meegan Holland is offering ticket holders two options: You can either request a refund (through Dec. 10), or you can donate your ticket money to the group to help cover expenses. "It appears most of Doris' medical costs will be covered, but canceling shows has put a strain on the band since they make their living at music," Holland writes on the STP site. Holland asks that ticket buyers who want refunds should email her at firstname.lastname@example.org by Dec. 10. After that time, ticket money will be donated to Girlyman.
