Greater Lansing Ballet brings ’Nutcracker’ to Fairchild Theatre

Posted
For many people, the holiday season isn’t complete with a trip to "The Nutcracker," and Greater Lansing Ballet Co. is happy to oblige.

"The Nutcracker" wil be performed at 7 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday in Michigan State University’s Fairchild Theatre.

The production features guest artists Dorothy O’Shea Overbey as the Sugar Plum Fair, and John-Mark Owen as her partner.

Both dancers hail from New York City. O’Shea Overbey’s work as both a classical ballet performer and choreographer includes, George Balanchine’s

“Concerto Barocco,” and “Who Cares” as well as previous GLBC stagings of “The Nutcracker.”

Owen received critical acclaim for the Greenville Ballet’s production of “Dracula” and was honored as an Emerging Choreographer by Gotham Arts Exchange.

O’Shea Overbey and Owen join a cast of local dancers, including Nadia Zwieback, Maya de Leon, Emma Asaf, Maggie Townsend-Mehler, Antonette Patino and Brigitte Torres.

The ballet tells the story of a young girl who is swept away into a land of living toys, dancing sweets, swirling snowflakes and mischievious mice. The score was composed by Peter Illyich Tchaikovsky.

This is the 21st year for Greater Lansing Ballet, which is overseen by founding artistic director Barbara Banasikowski Smith.
