Last year, Danny Trevino opened Hydro World Hydroponics, a grow-equipment store, and began instructing others in the art of hydroponic growing. The location on Barnes Avenue in south Lansing isn’t exactly in a business hotspot for a medical marijuana dispensary.

With the desire and need to expand, Trevino opened up a second location earlier this year solely as a dispensary — right on Grand River Avenue in Old Town. It sparked controversy, but also a business boom throughout the Lansing area.

HydroWorld in Old Town specializes in selling Michigan grown meds, and has recently added “medibles” and other cannabis products to its selection. The recent makeover of the inside with additional chairs and a display case seems to have done wonders for the look and feel of the place.

Most of the strains at HydroWorld go for $17 per gram, but when it’s around, the Danny Trevino bud, a popular strain with local origins, goes for $20. The D.T. is a hybrid plant with big buds, tons of trichomes and an intense, lasting high. Other shops in the area started carrying this strain due to its popularity.

The Blueberry strain, a classic indica-dominant hybrid that dates back to the 1970s, looked great with trichomeladen, fluffy nugs. The sweet, fruity aroma and taste lead to a lasting body buzz. This strain has been regarded for it’s medicinal benefits including the relief of chronic pain, nausea and cramping, as are many other indicas.

Another eye-pleasing strain was the Cinderella, better known as C99, a sativa-dominant hybrid. It smelled a bit like rotting fruit — sweet and musty. The taste was slightly piney, sweet and not too thick. The uplifting, clear-headed high was enjoyable and still evident more than two hours later.

Unlike the Cinderella, Casey Jones, another sativa strain, produced a very heavy, intense head-high that takes hold almost immediately, but leaves a little quicker. For medicinal purposes, sativas are often looked to for treating cerebral issues, such as depression and anxiety. Either of these strains would be a good choice for sativa-desired effects, even with uniquely different highs.

HydroWorld has three locations, and although the Old Town shop doesn’t offer clones or equipment like the south side store, the quality products have kept business steady. The third location is at 4513 S. Martin Luther King Blvd.
