(Thursday, Jan. 6) On Jan. 10, a diverse range of businesses will celebrate Michigan’s culinary assets and share ideas to promote culinary tourism at East Lansing’s Kellogg Center.

The Creating Michigan Culinary Destinations conference — a first of its kind for the state — is being organized by the Michigan Culinary Tourism Alliance, in partnership with the Department of Agriculture, Travel Michigan and the Michigan Restaurant Association.

“Culinary tourism is an exciting new area of economic development for Michigan,” said Linda Jones, executive director of the Michigan Grape and Wine Council.

Dave Lorenz, manager of public and industry relations at Travel Michigan, said quality food is part of travelling experiences people are looking for. Michigan’s diverse agriculture, hunting and fishing provide fresh foods and create that authentic experience, he said.

The one-day conference will feature three panels: Connecting Farm to Table, Building Lodging and Tour Packages, and Marketing Your Culinary Tourism Destination.

Andy Deloney, vice president of public affairs of Michigan Restaurant Association, said the conference will increase awareness of Michigan’s dining destinations and build connections among businesses to develop culinary tourism.
