Tuesday, Jan. 11 — The Lansing City Council unanimously approved Monday appointing Karen Hulett as legislative office manager to eventually replace 23-year veteran Terese Horn.
Council Vice President Kathie Dunbar said that in her Personnel Committee interview Hulett showed exemplary organizational skills and a “solid, long history” when working with engineers.
Hulett is scheduled to start work on the 10th floor of City Hall on Jan. 31. She will train with Horn.
In other business, the Council unanimously approved two tributes recognizing Martin Luther King, Jr. and longtime eastside resident Martha Dee.
The city Department of Human Relations and Community Services is hosting the 30th annual MLK memorial Thursday. “The Legacy Lives on Through Action” event includes a memorial from noon to 1 p.m. followed by a reception in the City Council chambers on the 10th floor of City Hall.
The Council also recognized Dee, a Lansing native, for her dedication to community service. She served the Bingham Community Association for more than 17 years, the Eastside Neighborhood Organization for more than 25 and was a board member of the Allen Neighborhood Center and Baker-Donora Center.
Also, the Council unanimously approved a resolution supporting the Old Town Commercial Association’s application into the Great American Main Street Awards competition.
Brittney Hoszkiw, executive director of the association, said thousands of communities similar to Old Town have been recognized with the award.
“This is to show the successes we’ve had in Old Town for the past 15 years. Hopefully in the spring we’ll be bringing home an award,” she said.
