A Super Bowl party with a purpose

Sir Pizza fund-raiser benefits Guatemalans

Posted

Super Bowl Sunday will offer a chance for local residents to help provide health care in Guatemala.
Sir Pizza Grand Caf in Old Town is holding an event at 6 p.m. Feb. 6, to help raise funds for Michigan State University students and teachers venturing on a two-week mission to the region of Chimatenango, where 60 percent of people do not have routine access to health care. Handmade artwork from Guatemala will be available for purchase.
“Everything made that day will go towards medical supplies,” said Lucy Kurtz, a first-year student in the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “All the proceeds from the Guatemalan art being sold are being donated to the trip.”
Kurtz said that all the press turned this fundraiser into something much bigger and the expected turnout is at least 100 people, which should help the five students, one professor and the volunteers provide the region with medical care.
MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine partnered with Botsford Hospital and DOCARE International to provide ongoing health care. Together, they are in the process of establishing a permanent clinic.

Sir Pizza is located at 201 E. Grand River Ave. in Lansing. The phone number is (517) 484-4825.
