HerStories explores 'Embodying Our Words'

Free two-day seminar looks at the idea of embodied writing

“Embodying Our Words” offers a chance for writers to share their work dialogue, workshops, performances and open writing sessions that all correspond to the theme of embodied writing. The two-day event, being held Friday and Saturday, is free and open to everyone.

Part of the HerStories Project, “Words” is inspired by Gloria Anzaldua’s essay, “now let us shift ... the path of conocimiento ... inner work, public acts,” which looks at the body as a writing tool.

“Words” opens on Friday at Michigan State University’s Residential College in the Arts and Humanities, with participants reading a passage from Anzaldua’s essay and reflecting on the theme of “embodying our words.” The event continues with a workshop exploring the same theme through visual artists via the art exhibit “Transitions,” located in the LGBT Resource Center at Michigan State University.

Saturday’s sessions are held in the Women’s Center of Greater Lansing. The “Composing with Voice and Movement” seminar is separated into four parts throughout the day. Interspersed between sections are open-writing sessions and an opportunity for another workshop that focuses on the personality of the individual and the larger communal one.

“It’s all about composing with voice, and using your body as a tool for writing,” said event co-organizer Melissa Dey Hasbrook.
