Monday, March 7 — The only scheduled business at tonight’s Lansing City Council meeting is setting a public hearing for March 14 to consider property tax exemptions for a health insurance research firm.
MedAssurant, a health insurance research group headquartered in Maryland, is seeking personal property tax exemptions at their local offices at 3301 E. Michigan Ave. The abatement would be for all taxes on any new personal property acquired, which typically includes new equipment.
Past personal property tax abatements have gone to technology firms like Niowave, Neogen and Emergent Biosolutions and typically last 12 years.
In other news, the Council was notified last week of the city’s plan to move more than $65,000 from the parks millage fund into the River Trail Repair and Maintenance Fund. The money would go toward repairs on the River Trail just south of the Elm Street bridge in REO Town. The money was to be designated for the River Trail Map Fund and also the Hunter Park Shelter.
The Council has not yet scheduled a vote on the fund transfer.
