Jonathan Safran Foer's “Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" has been selected as this year's novel in the One Book, One Community program, sponsored by the City of East Lansing and Michigan State University.

The 2005 best seller is set in Manhattan in 2001, a city seen through the eyes of a precocious 9-year-old named Oskar Schell. "This year’s program simultaneously celebrates the 10th anniversary ofOBOC, while also paying tribute to the 10th anniversary of the 9/11tragedy," noted a press release from City of East Lansing communications coordinator Ami Van Antwerp.

Foer visits Lansing Aug. 28 for a talk and book signing at East Lansing High School; he'll also welcome the Michigan State University freshman class in the Breslin Center the following day. Both events are open to the public and free.

A film adaptation of "Extremely Loud," starring Tom Hanks, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman and Max von Sydow and directed by Stephen Daldry ("The Hours"), is slated to open next year.
