A little night (chamber) music

Pianist Ralph Votapek performs with the Detroit Chamber Winds and Strings at Wharton

Posted

Detroit Chamber Winds andStrings was started by four friends who missed the intimate music style andsmaller pieces of their college days. Since then it has grown into a collectionof musicians from the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and Michigan Opera TheatreOrchestra who come together to perform and record chamber music.

The chamber music experience comes to Wharton Center Sunday, in the Cobb Great Hall. Theperformance includes music from composers like Mozart, Stravinsky,Giovanni Gabrieli and George Antheil.

“Chamber music isn’tperformed as frequently as orchestral music,” said Sally Lawton, public relationsand marketing associate for the DCWS. “This isan opportunity for (the DCWS) to dig out pieces that they wouldn’t normally play witha larger orchestra. It allows the audience and musicians to engage with eachother in a new way.”

Audience members will alsoget a chance to engage with the musicians during a free half-hour preview lecture beginning 45 minutes before the performance in the Stoddard Grand TierLounge.

The DCWS will be accompanied by Lansing pianist Ralph Votapek, professor emeritus of piano at the Michigan State University Collegeof Music, as well as the Gold Medalist of the first Van Cliburn InternationalPiano Competition and winner of the Naumburg Award.
