Leroy’s hosts blues master Mark Hummel 

Harmonica player and vocalist Mark Hummel brings his band, The Blues Survivors, to Leroy’s Classic Bar & Grill Wednesday. The band, which includes blues guitarist Rusty Zinn, has played alongside Charlie Musselwhite, Brownie McGhee, Lowell Fulson and Eddie Taylor. For more information, visit

Accomplished folk balladeer at Ten Pound Fiddle

Tim Eriksen is a highly accomplished folk ballad singer, combining exciting vocals with savvy arrangements for fiddle, banjo, and guitar. He has performed at the Smithsonian Institution, Carnegie Hall — and even at the now-defunct legendary New York punk club CBGB.

This Friday, he’ll play at the Ten Pound Fiddle. Old New England murder ballads, Southern Appalachian and Irish songs, gospel: Eriksen does them all. His music has been featured in films like Billy Bob Thornton’s “Chrystal,” “Behold the Earth” and the Oscarwinning “Cold Mountain.”

He also performed on the 2009 Grammy-nominated album “Across the Divide” with Afro-Cuban world-jazz phenomenon Omar Sosa.

Before the Ten Pound Fiddle show, East Lansing Food Co-op offers a community dinner, beginning at 6 p.m.

Thrill Kill Kult industrializes Mac’s Bar

Chicago’s My Life With The Thrill Kill Kult has been performing extravagant stage shows since it formed in 1987. The band visits Mac’s Bar Friday.

Originally signed to Chicago’s industrial dance label Wax Trax!, the Thrill Kill Kult moved to Interscope Records in the early 1990s, where they released their best-known song, “Sex on Wheelz” (featured in the animated movie "Cool World"). The Italian band Bahntier is the opening act.

OgreFest 2011 thrashes Lansing with metal

The 5th Annual OgreFest 2011 at Mac’s Bar showcases Lansing headbangers, along with some touring acts, making for an all-day, devil-horn fest. The event is hosted by David Peterman of the local band Satyriasis (which will perform at the fest).

The roster of local and national bands includes Wastelander, Genocya, Acid Witch, High Spirits, Araphat, Heavy Lies the Crown, Dagon, Homme Alone, The Devastator, Ultrathrash, Sworn Secrecy, Dozic, Bullpig, Teratoma, Infinite Design, Burn The Hearse, Flood the Desert, Fable of Deceit, and Virally Enthroned.

“The Lansing metal scene is better than ever," Peterman said, "Bands are putting out great records, getting signed, going on tour and booking themselves really cool shows. We definitely don’t have much to complain about when it comes to our metal in this town.”

Jazz trumpeter Gardner brings quintet to Leroy’s

Freelance trumpeter, composer and arranger Derrick Gardner is an assistant professor of jazz trumpet at Michigan State University’s College of Music. On Saturday, the Derrick Gardner Quintet performs at Leroy’s Classic Bar & Grill.

Gardner has worked with legendary jazz artists, including George Benson, Nancy Wilson, Tony Bennett and the late Dizzy Gillespie. He is also a former member of the Count Basie Orchestra and performed on the ensemble’s 1997 Grammy-winning recording “Live at Manchester Craftman’s Guild.”

Jazz Thursdays at East Lansing’s Mumbai

Aside from fine Indian cuisine, each Thursday evening Mumbai hosts live jazz. This week’s performers are the Mike Daniels Trio, featuring Roger Gagnon and Ron Moore. On April 21, Mike Eyia — Orchestra Ritmo’s masterful leader and guitarist/singer — performs, along with Mike Daniels and Bill Bastian.
