Ready to roll the dice on love

Holt-Dimondale Players bets on ’Guys and Dolls’

"Guys and Dolls" is a story of gamblers, police, mission workers and a game of craps — and, according to producer Gary Mitchell, the show ultimately gives us a message about the sanctity of marriage.

The Holt & Dimondale Community Players is bringing back the glitz, glamour and gambling of a bygone era, beginning Thursday.

Sixty-one years after it debuted on Broadway, "Guys and Dolls" is what Mitchell calls the “quintessential musical,” and has since been performed on stage more than any other musical, with numerous Broadway revivals over the years. Its characters are based on the creations of novelist Damon Runyon, and its score — which includes "Sit Down, You’re Rocking the Boat," "I’ve Never Been in Love Before," "I’ll Know" and "Luck Be a Lady" — comes from the legendary Frank Loesser

The Holt & Dimondale version, directed by Michael Zamora, features a young cast, adding a few of Zamora’s own fresh twists to the script.

“Theatergoers are going to see a different kind of production,” said Mitchell, who is also acting in the musical. “It’s loyal to the script and to the score, but a little different in the dancing and the makeup of the characters.”

Actual performances are simple compared to the preparations for a musical, Mitchell said.

“Shows are easy,” Mitchell said. “It’s the rehearsal process that is most time-consuming and tiring. Our plan right now is to run the show between now and opening night and fine tune it as much as possible.”

Chad DeKatch plays professional gamble Sky Masterson, with Rachael Raymer as Salvation Army worker Sarah Brown, who makes it her mission to reform Sky and his cronies. Keith Gracia Wing and Kate Stachiewitz Tykocki take on the roles of Nathan Detroit and his longtime sweetheart Adelaide.

The show co-stars Jack Preiss, Dale Powell, Matt Land, Andrew Snyder, Jennifer Warncke Miller, Adam Carlson, Anthony DeRosa, Kurk Prater, Becca Bauer and Erica Johnson.

All revenues raised by the event go to support the Holt Public Schools.
