Owner: James Hornberger Jr.
Assessed value: $22,000
Owner says: Demolition is coming

Architecture critic Amanda Harrell-Seyburn says: The word is, this lovely little bungalow at 708 N. Pennsylvania Ave. will soon be a victim of the wrecking ball. Sometimes buildings are torn down and, sad as it can be, the blow can be softened by saving valuable features. Architectural salvage — the practice of removing and resuing the valuable features like masonry, interior wood, fixtures and glass — is a great way to preserve some of the embodied energy. Architectural salvage is a great way to find fixtures and materials that are either out-of-production or too costly to manufacture today to furnish your historic home with. This property has a simply gorgeous window of clear leaded glass that would be an ideal salvage.

Property owner James Hornberger Jr. said this house two doors down from his business, the Golf Haus, is “going to be gone in a very short time.” Hornberger said it has “just really fallen into disrepair in the last year or so.” He’s not kidding: Weeds are overtaking the back steps, the front porch steps look like they could collapse at any minute, the brick chimney is crumbling and the roof is sagging and rotting.

Hornberger said he intends to keep the property after the house is gone. Perhaps the empty lot would make for a good putting green? “I don’t know about that,” he said.
