Author/poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook tells 'Stories About Turtle Island' Saturday at Everybody Reads Books and Stuff

Authorand poet Melissa Dey Hasbrook shares stories about what makes Michigan home in“Stories About Turtle Island” at 1 p.m. Saturday, atEverybody Reads Books and Stuff, 2019 E. Michigan Ave., in Lansing.

Dey Hasbookwill be debuting her recent book, “Circle …Home.” Inspired by the land in whichshe grew up, Dey Hasbrook wanted to pay homage by dedicating her book toMichigan and her ancestors, she said. Pre-orders for the book, which isofficially released this fall, will be available at a discount price.

“(Thebook) is a collection of poems and prose inspired by the lands,” she said. “Italso does something specific about telling stories of my own.”

Theevent will be an open mic format and the public is welcome to share their own Michiganstories and experiences, Dey Hasbrook said.

“Partof (the experience) is looking at the different communities that have lived onthe land,” she said. “(It’s also about looking) at the communities across thathave lived here for generations.”

IllustratorLinda Robinson, who collaborated with Dey Hasbrook on “Circle” and musicianBarb Barton are among the performers.

Althoughadmission is free, donations are collected to support the Central Michigan WildRice Camp. The camp, which takes place the Labor Day holiday, offers participants a chance to harvest wild rice as the indigenous peoples did.
