Bon voyage, Mr. Jemerson

Tuesday, June 7 — The Lansing City Council declared June 6 “Murdock Jemerson Day” at its meeting Monday, recognizing the outgoing parks director.

Jemerson, who spent 10 years as the city’s parks director and seven years as manager of leisure services, will leave the city in a week for a job with the state Department of Natural Resources.

“It’s really been an honor,” Jemerson, who is 60, said during a presentation led by Mayor Virg Bernero. He thanked Lansing residents for approving three parks millages since 2000.

“That’s really speaking volumes to you and how you feel about your park system. Parks are yours: Take care of them in the future,” he said.

Jemerson will be district manager for the Rose Lake district for the state DNR.

Starting Tuesday, Brett Kaschinske — Parks and Recreation Department manager of leisure services — will serve as interim director.

In other business, the Council unanimously approved six resolutions on its consent agenda:
  • A tribute recognizing the Old Town Commercial Association for receiving the “Great American Main Street Award” two weeks ago;
  • An entertainment permit for Simmons Properties LLC for its business at 325 City Market Drive;
  • Two licenses to sell retail fireworks at two American Eagle Superstore locations: 901 N. Larch St. and 3366 Remy Drive;
  • A grant application for Lead Safe Lansing’s lead hazard reduction demonstration grant, offered through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The nearly $3.3 million grant requires the city’s development office to match 30 percent of the funding, which is paid with Community Development Block Grant money; and
  • Setting a public hearing for June 20 on the Principal Shopping District special assessment for fiscal years 2012-2014. The special assessment taxes commercial properties in designated zones downtown and in Old Town that go toward maintenance and “physical improvements.”
