Just for the health of it

East Lansing Farmer’s Market starts its third year Sunday

Posted

Agro-enthusiasts will be congregating in East Lansing as the East Lansing Farmer’s Market starts its third year this Sunday.

The market welcomes back many vendors offering both conventional and organic produce, meats, fish, cheese, baked goods and more.

The growers-only market supports community and local economic development by requiring vendors to be Michigan-based.

Included in the vendor ranks are Clearview Orchards, The Country Mill, El Azteco, Fresh Lake Whitefish Co., Gibbs Berry Farm, Greenbrush Farms Dolce Vita Goat Dairy, Hang’s Farm, Nibble, Nightengale Farms, Owosso Organics, Pregitzer Farm, Spartan Country Meats, Stone Circle Bakehouse, Sweet Polly’s Pure Breads and Desserts and Tirell Centennial Farm.

Wellness will be emphasized at the first Market Sunday. A two-mile health walk with East Lansing Mayor Vic Loomis is scheduled to begin at 9:30 a.m.; the first 200 participants to complete the walk will receive a $5 market voucher.

New this season are mobile food carts from Grand Grillin’ and Trailer Park’d “slow” Fast Food for those looking for a quick, hot bite.

“For our community, it’s a gathering place,” says market manager Michelle Carlson. “You get to see your neighbors, support small farmers and get really good quality food,” Carlson says. “It’s community in action.”
