Saturday Afternoon Fever

Bust a move on the Capitol lawn this Saturday at noon

Posted

The term "Lansing movers and shakers" might take on a whole new meaning Saturday, as dancers descend on the Capitol lawn to celebrate National Dance Day.

You don't have to be Zac Efron or Ke$ha to join them — and you don't need tap shoes or tights. Anyone of any experience level is welcome to participate in the event, which is sponsored by In Motion Dance Center of Lansing. Registration is $5 and begins at 10 a.m.

Between 11 a.m. and noon, In Motion instructors will coach participants through the routines that will be performed. You can get a sneak preview of what to expect at the In Motion website, which features video clips of the dances. (You can also find the videos at the Dance 4 Your Life site.) The final performance will be taped and sent to Fox's "So You Think You Can Dance."

If that gets you warmed up and ready for more, head over to Spartan Dance Center in East Lansing, which offers a day's worth of free classes. Try out zumba at 1 p.m., beginner/intermediate hip hop at 1: 30 p.m., intermediate/advanced hip hop at 2 p.m. and introduction to ballroom and salsa at 2:30 p.m. The studio invites the curious to come for one class or stay for all four.
