Safe Harbor Alternative Medicine is located on the hippest block of shops on Michigan Avenue, wedged between Emil’s Restaurant and across the street from Gone Wired Café between Clemens and Fairview avenues.

Safe Harbor, which opened in early July after taking over the lease of Capitol City Compassion Club, occupies a large, open storefront that has a community-centered vibe. The co-owners — one of whom is Mike Malott, author of the “Michigan Medical Marijuana Handbook” — were overseeing the dispensary when I visited on a recent Wednesday evening. They were very easy to talk with and had a wealth of medical marijuana information, history and experience.

Per standard practice, my credentials were checked in the lobby area, which was spacious and well lit. The back room also is quite large and houses medicines, smoking accessories and books. Safe Harbor does offer physician referrals and massage therapy from a certified massage therapist. The owners indicated that they have plans to add a number of services, products, a clone room and a kitchen for cooking medibles. They are also hoping to open the second floor for live music and other cultural functions.

One unique service Safe Harbor offers is a grow room consultation for caregivers and patients looking to start their own cannabis cultivation. Price is based on the size of the grow area.

On this visit, Safe Harbor had eight strains — several of which I had not seen before — that ranged from $12 to $20 a gram. A novel item at Safe Harbor is a sampler of half-grams in a refillable container. The sampler provides individuals with the opportunity to try a variety of strains at a reduced cost. I selected the Apollo 13 for $15, which is a sativa-dominant strain. I received a generously dense, light-green bud. A friend who is also a patient described the flavor of the plant as “spicy-sweet.” The effect was an almost immediate soaring euphoria, which was somewhat surprising based on my experience with vaporization.
